Discovery of Romance Episode 4

As Yeo-reum sings her song onstage, Ha-jin and Tae-ha stare at each other, each man sizing up his competition. The song finishes and the guys shake hands and comment on how often they see each other lately. Sol makes introductions, and Ha-jin keeps it to himself that he knows this is the man that Yeo-reum spent the night with.
He asks Tae-ha how he and Yeo-reum ended up working together, and Tae-ha gives a professional answer without revealing their personal relationship. Yeo-reum drags Sol to the bathroom to fuss at her for inviting Ha-jin, and Sol assures her that she made Tae-ha promise not to mention they used to date.

The guys exchange business cards and stand there awkwardly, and Ha-jin thinks how women can become instant friends but men need to size each other up first. Tae-ha asks if Ha-jin plays pool and suggests a game. You know, for fun.
Both men try to fool the other by saying they haven’t played in a while, but the game gets intense pretty quickly. Soon they’re talking smack and “accidentally” body-checking each other, as both of them admit to being competitive. Ha-jin gets a boost of confidence when both girls cheer for him, and he wins handily when Tae-ha flubs a few shots. Ha-jin says they should have laid a bet on the game, and Tae-ha challenges him to another game next week.

Yeo-reum’s mother arrives at her workplace to find Producer Bae there using her shower, and she throws out his nasty shoes. She tells Gi-eun to buy him a new pair, which is kind of sweet despite her grumpiness about it.
At the bar, Yeo-reum offers herself and Ha-jin to wait until Tae-ha’s designated driver arrives, and he glowers when he notices the couple ring she wears. Haha, I love the western-shootout background music as the guys send each other bland I’m totally not jealous of you at all glares.
Ha-jin drives Yeo-reum and a drunk Sol home, and demands to know how Yeo-reum ended up in a business partnership with Tae-ha. She’s reluctant to explain and he says he’ll let it go if she doesn’t, but warns her against letting him come up with explanations on his own.

She still won’t talk, so Ha-jin angrily pulls over and reminds her that she slept over at Tae-ha’s house. She hotly denies that anything happened, and Ha-jin says he can accept all the coincidences of them meeting at the hotel, switching phones, and her falling asleep at his place – but asking him to accept that their working together is another coincidence is too much. Yeo-reum apologizes for not telling him, but says that she’s innocent, and her proof is that they invited Ha-jin out with them tonight. If she were guilty, wouldn’t she try to hide?
Tae-ha takes care of his bunny and complains to her that Yeo-reum hasn’t changed, falling head over heels whenever she meets someone new. He asks the bunny (whom he’s named Han Yeo-reum, cute) if all girls are like that. If Bunny Yeo-reum knows, she’s not talking.

Ha-jin is still complaining about Tae-ha when he drops Yeo-reum at home, saying he was much too intense for a friendly game of billiards. Yeo-reum assures him that Tae-ha is just like that – he’s arrogant and hates losing. Ha-jin grumpily asks for a kiss, but Yeo-reum says he should kiss her since he suspected her for nothing, and he adorably sulks that he always loses.
Ha-jin starts to drive off but Sol pops up out of the backseat, scaring him (and me!) half to death. She assures him that everything Yeo-reum said was true and goes inside, and he leaves feeling a bit more reassured. Tae-ha texts Yeo-reum to complain that she spoke to him formally in front of her boyfriend, and she asks him to speak formally too next time, since Ha-jin is feeling insecure.

Discovery of Romance Episode 2

We start off with a devastated Yeo-reum, who’s failed at every single attempt to lie to her boyfriend Ha-jin about where she was last night. She eventually gives up and tells him that she’ll explain everything afterwards. She hangs up and looks back at the bed where she slept, next to her ex-boyfriend Tae-ha. They make eye contact, and she wonders what the heck happened to them last night.
Back in her clothes, Yeo-rum asks Tae-ha what happened. How did they end up sleeping in the same bed? Casually making coffee, Tae-ha asks if she doesn’t remember anything. “You seemed to be having a good time. It’s a shame you don’t remember. I liked it… last night.” She reacts to his vagueness with a worried look.
Over at Yeo-reum’s house, Mom calls the three friends into the house and heads in. Outside, Sol blames Ha-jin for going out on the blind date, as Yeo-reum is sure to have drowned her sorrows drinking the night away and passed out somewhere. She even did that last year during her dad’s memorial day. Sol angrily walks into the house, and Joon-ho follows, lamenting that today will be Ha-jin’s memorial day.

Yeo-reum tries to clarify if they actually slept together last night, but Tae-ha doesn’t help. He seems amused and tells her that since she has a boyfriend, it’s better for her to not remember and just believe that nothing happened. Yeo-reum’s convinced that he’s bluffing and nothing actually happened. Tae-ha smiles at how she’s getting so worked up about this and tells her that it’s going to be hard to send her back to her boyfriend.
Yeo-reum points out that he had ways to get her home last night, but Tae-ha gives her an unexpected reply. “I didn’t want to send you home. I wanted to stay with you for a day. Because once in a while, I thought of you.”
The tense moment of silence is broken by Tae-ha’s offer to make her breakfast since it’s her birthday. Yeo-reum snaps out of it and tells him that it’s indeed her birthday, so she wants to spend it with people she likes. Hoping that she never sees him again, she walks out.

Looking back at Tae-ha’s house, Yeo-reum narrates her feelings. “This is the worst. I don’t know what to do because I don’t remember everything. How could I spend the night at Kang Tae-ha’s house? And lie to my boyfriend…” Speaking of, Ha-jin stares at his phone, contemplating whether or not to use the GPS tracker on Yeo-reum.
Yeo-reum takes a taxi home and asks the driver where they are. She finds out they’re in Seongbuk-dong, and so does Ha-jin, who’s looked up her location. He stares at his phone, unable to understand why she would have gone there. In his office, he looks at his proposal ring and texts Yeo-reum to make sure she made it home and to wish her a happy birthday.

Sol and Joon-ho go through the birthday cake rituals, and as soon as Yeo-reum blows out the candles, Joon-ho cuts to the chase and asks her where she was last night. He suspects that she was with Tae-ha, and Sol doubts it. But Yeo-reum confirms this, saying she wants to die. She tries to explain the situation, but Sol asks the question of the hour: “Did you sleep with him? Did you do it?”
Joon-ho cuts her off and tries to figure out what exactly went down, but Yeo-reum can’t explain. Her friends give her a well-deserved tsk tsk and decide that they cannot tell Ha-jin about this, or at most, insist that they did not sleep together.
At work, Ha-jin and Joon-ho attend to a new plastic surgery patient, discussing which parts of the face they’ll take care of. They give her a mouth wrinkle operation as service, since she’s a celebrity (cameo by comedian Jung Joo-ri). When we see her face, it’s covered in pen marks, and she insists that she’ll no longer be a comedian; she will be an actress.

Discovery of Romance Episode 2

Yoon Hyun-min and Kim Seul-gi join Discovery of Romance

I’m hoping the premiere episode of Discovery of Romance will do a good job of introducing us to the characters and explaining their relationships, because with the whirlwind of recent activity, I’m having trouble keeping the cast and their roles straight.Yoon Hyun-min (Witch’s Romance, Age of Feeling) has joined the cast as a top plastic surgeon, and I’m assuming his character works with Sung Joon, who has been cast as the perfect plastic surgeon boyfriend to Jung Yumi’s lead character, a furniture designer.

In addition, Yoon will play Jung Yumi’s childhood oppa — they grew up in the same neighborhood, and when, as a child, his parents decide to emigrate to New Zealand, he ends up staying in Korea and living at Jung Yumi’s house. He’s a playful flirt and ladies man, so it sounds like he’ll be a good counter to Sung Joon’s wholesomeness (and maybe we’ll get another Witch’s Romance-type bromance).
Interestingly, Kim Seul-gi’s character is also a furniture designer (I can see the convenience of limiting the characters to two workplace settings) and is described as a bit slow and shallow, but once she’s in a relationship, she’s been known to fall head over heels in love. She doesn’t think about what’s in front of or behind her; she is a simpleton who charges full steam ahead. It sounds like a great role for Kim to display her comedic acting skills, and I like that the show seems to be focusing on the fun as well as the relationships.
